Technical Dossier & Guidelines

Overview

Somalia holds extensive mineral reserves, including high-purity gypsum, silica sand, calcium carbonate, kaolin, gold, copper, uranium, and rare earth elements (REEs). SNREC incorporates **IMA-Europe (Industrial Minerals Association Europe)** standards to transform informal quarrying into a modern, health-compliant, and environmentally sustainable industrial sector.

IMA-Europe Sustainable Mineral Standards

Adopting European industrial mineral specifications allows Somali mineral exports to meet stringent international quality, occupational health, and environmental criteria:

1. Industrial Mineral Purity & Technical Grading Establishing technical specifications for key Somali industrial minerals: - **Gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O)**: Purity ≥ 95% for high-strength wallboard and cement manufacturing. - **Silica Sand (SiO2)**: Low-iron silica (≥ 99.2%) suited for photovoltaic solar glass and foundry applications. - **Calcium Carbonate & Kaolin**: Ground and precipitated mineral grades for paint, paper, and ceramic industries.

2. Occupational Dust & Respirable Crystalline Silica (RCS) Adopting IMA-Europe's Health & Safety protocols to control airborne dust. Enforcing an Occupational Exposure Limit (OEL) for Respirable Crystalline Silica of **≤ 0.05 mg/m³** (8-hour TWA) with mandatory wet drilling and enclosed dust containment.

3. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) & Circular Economy Utilizing ISO 14040/44 LCA methodologies to measure the carbon footprint of mineral extraction and processing. Promoting zero-waste quarrying by re-purposing quarry overburden into domestic road aggregate.

Key Technical Domain Services

1. Geological Mapping & Remote Sensing Synthesizing baseline mineral maps and remote-sensing data across key structural belts to identify priority exploration targets for metallic and industrial minerals.

2. Mining Cadastre Modernization Advising regulatory bodies on digital cadastre management to ensure secure title registry, transparent concession awards, and conflict-free mining rights.

3. ASM Formalization & Clean Technology Replacing hazardous processing methods with mercury-free gravity separation equipment while training artisanal mining cooperatives in occupational safety.
